These two get confused more than any other pair in the yard. They look similar in a pile and behave very differently in the ground.
What #57 stone is
Clean, angular crushed limestone in pieces about 3/4 inch across. The pieces are all roughly the same size, so gaps stay open between them and water passes straight through. It does not pack down into a hard surface, which is exactly what you want in a drain and exactly what you do not want under tires.
What crusher run is
Crushed stone blended with fine particles, sometimes called stone dust. The fines fill the gaps between the larger pieces, so it compacts into a dense, firm surface that holds up under vehicles. Think of it as the base layer that everything else sits on.

How to choose
Follow the water. If the job needs water to move through the material, choose #57 stone. If the job needs a surface that stays hard under weight, choose crusher run.
